We thank the faculty of the Georgetown Nonprofit Management Executive Certificate Program, who have come together to create this collection of essays and resources to help nonprofit leaders tackle the challenges of managing their organizations.
At the Center for Public and Nonprofit Leadership, we can think of no better topic with which to begin this series. We believe that the voices of America’s nonprofits are the voices of its people, and we encourage advocacy that is both strong and thoughtful.

Marketing and Communications in Nonprofit Organizations David Williamson is Managing Director of in the consulting firm of Bernuth & Williamson, serving nonprofit clients in the areas of strategy, marketing, and communications. He previously served for 13 years in senior management positions at The Nature Conservancy, the nation’s 10th largest nonprofit, including six years as Director of Communications (1997-2002) and terms as Vice President for Marketing and Director of Conservation Marketing. He is an adjunct professor of business administration at the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University and has lectured on nonprofit management at Harvard Business School, Stanford Business School, and the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University, among others. Williamson, a summa cum laude graduate of Princeton University, serves in leadership positions on three nonprofit boards in addition to his work with clients. Governing the Nonprofit Organization ![]() Michela M. Perrone, Ph.D., is President of MMP Associates, a consulting firm established in 1993 to support the successful development and increased effectiveness of organizations, boards and CEOs in the United States and Europe. She is a Senior Associate for Board Source (formerly the National Center for Nonprofit Boards), a consultant and trainer for the Washington Council of Agencies, the Maryland Association of Nonprofits, and Innovation Network. Previously, Perrone served for 15 years as president and chief executive officer of the Kennedy Institute in Washington D.C. She has consulted with hundreds of organizations in the U.S. and abroad in governance, board development, and strategic planning. Advocacy in the Public Interest ![]() Gary D. Bass, Ph.D., is the Founder and Executive Director of OMB Watch, a national organization addressing government accountability and citizen participation. He is also an Associate Professor at Georgetown University’s Public Policy Institute where he teaches about nonprofit advocacy and social change. He is well known for assisting nonprofit organizations in better understanding federal rules affecting their organizations and constituencies and for leading national campaigns to protect the advocacy voice of nonprofits. He is the author of the 2007 book, Seen but not Heard: Strengthening Nonprofit Advocacy, and many other publications. For each of the last nine years he has been selected as one of the Nonprofit Times Power and Influence Top 50. He has received numerous other awards, including being inducted into the National Freedom of Information Act Hall of Fame for his advocacy to advance government transparency. Bass has served on many advisory panels and nonprofit boards including the Center for Lobbying in the Public Interest and the National Center for Responsive Philanthropy. Bass received a combined doctorate in psychology and education from the University of Michigan, along with the University's highest award for graduate student teaching and several awards for academic excellence. |
