History and Mission

In 1997, Georgetown University launched a bold initiative to strengthen America’s nonprofit sector—the creation of a new academic center, housed within what is currently the McCourt School of Public Policy, to serve as a leading education, research and training center. The Center would focus on developing nonprofit leaders and scholars, providing them with the skills and courage to effectively address social needs and civic problems.

Today, the Center for Public & Nonprofit Leadership is recognized globally for its academic excellence, its campus and community collaborations, and its rich work with the nonprofit field worldwide.

Whether teaching students at the University, educating leaders in the field, creating learning opportunities for the greater Washington community or mentoring organizations from abroad, the Center informs and strengthens not only the nonprofit sector, but also public and private entities that increasingly are its partners. The Center’s legacy is its students—traditional and non traditional. From Washington, D.C. to Darfur they are demonstrating their capacity to lead, innovate and become agents of change, making a difference in their organizations and community.

It is our honor to continue to pursue the mission of educating, nurturing and inspiring leaders in pursuit of the common good.
